Christmas Gifts

This year instead of sending Christmas cards NPL has chosen to use the money to buy life-changing gifts and help change someone's world this Christmas.

The gift of a school lunch

This gift will help children attending nursery schools, like the Burmese refugees in Ban Tractor Camp on the Thai-Burma border. It provides a child with a nutritious lunch, often the main meal of their day, every day for a school year.

Young refugee children are extremely vulnerable and most at risk of malnourishment.

Law Reh, the Director of the Karenni Education Department at the camp said, "Some people had no opportunity to go to school in Burma. They had no basics when they got here. But students can start at age five at kindergarten and have ten years of schooling, until they are 15. We also have post-high school places but they are limited. Some people are then trained to be teachers in primary schools or they work for community-based organisations. But their only opportunities are within the camp."

The gift of seeds and tools

This gift will give some of the most vulnerable farming families in Angola, Burundi and Rwanda all they need to start again after years of devastating violence and conflict. It provides them with fruit and vegetable seeds, tools like hand ploughs and tree seedlings for wood for construction and firewood.

This gift will be given to extremely poor and vulnerable households that are struggling to survive, including homes where the head of the house is an orphan or lone mother and people living with HIV/AIDS.
